the fine things

Staying at sea for a long period of time is not me.  Reasons:  No 1.  I dont swim well.  No. 2 choppy sea makes me ill.   Anything closer to shore is fine.  No no , didnt go fishing over independance day, daniel did:) He brought back some nice pictures and of course fresh fish !

With hands and mouth full like this, you gotta be crazy about fishing to be able to do this! :)  and look at the huge fish, it’s an 11kg ‘garoupa’!

Take me fishing?  May be not!

A day or two at sea  hhmm …. fishing, I think,  is great way to have fun, connect with friends or just yourself!  Daniel just got back from a 2N3D fishing trip with his fishing “kakis”.

As usual, good catch, big and small!  They apparently spotted a new and better fishing spot this time around which was a good thing as they brought back quite a handful!  This of course means fresh fish for dinner and free fish supply for next few months!! I mean… just look at this fish Daniel is holding?!  He caught 2 -3? or of this!

This fish is  “Ruby Snapper

daniel got back from his 3-day fishing trip today! not many catch but he caught one huge “mahi mahi”.  by just looking, i guess it must be more than 10 kg in weight!  Just to give you an idea  of what I mean by ‘huge’, see the pictures?

“mahi Mahi” reminds me of Hawaii.  the word ‘mahi mahi’ is a Hawaiian word that means “strong-strong” for dolphin fish.  while interning at Sheraton Waikiki dulu2, i recalled a colleague explaining to me that the name “mahi-mahi” , particularly on restaurant menus, has been adopted to avoid confusing these fish with proper Dolphins, which are mammals. 

daniel mentioned that “mahi mahi’ are exciting acrobatic fish that are hallenging and fun to catch – probably  can go into “maximum action”!   this type of fish can be found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world.  daniel and his gang were at the waters off Kota Belud when he caught this ‘mahi mahi’.

i also read that to get the best taste out of it, one has to know how to cook it right. I’m not  sure about this.  Delaware Sea Grant, University of Delaware  has the following to say about mahi mahi:

“…broiled, poached, baked, sautéed, grilled, or pan-fried, Mahi Mahi delivers a truly sensational taste. The National Fisheries Institute (USA) suggests that you try Mahi Mahi as an appetizer. Cut the fish into squares, marinate them in lime juice, and broil them with garlic butter. As a main course, baked Mahi Mahi served with a sweet-and-sour sauce is sure to win rave reviews from family and friends.

Mahi Mahi is one of those fish that is wonderful just about any way you can think to prepare it — from the simple to the complex, minimal ingredients to multiple ingredients, subtle to strong flavors. I love to use seafood in traditional meat and poultry dishes, and I know seafood tacos are not new, but made with Mahi Mahi, they’re great!” 

well, it is good to always have fresh fish for dinner!

…the morning weather was lovely!    

that’s the fishing boat, the one in the middle!  looks small, it’s actually big! 

early morning, we sent daniel to the jetty for his fishing trip with his gang.  before heading home, dropped by for breakfast at lim’s coffee corner.  located at the ground level of wisma sabah, this shop serves simple breakfast!  It’s been ages since I last set foot into this shop, perhaps 3 years already?  by noon time, Ian and I hit the road again, but not for some “explorace thingy’ this time, instead we headed to the malls after lunch.  havent found anything that interesting yet to buy while Ian got this request for toys granted! 

 Great catch of the day! 

After Daniel’s last few trips of only getting‘few bites’, his overnight trip this time got him some catches!  To celebrate their ‘catch’, he and his fishing gang normally go to a restaurant – yes, of course bringing with them their own best catch!.  This time, they head to a new location called Gaderian Restaurant (I reckon it’s new?). Ian and I tagged along to see their new location when Daniel sent over thier catch earier in the evening!  

If you’re from here and familiar with Sodomon Jetty, that’s exactly where it’s located.  At some point (I’m not sure if there still is), Monsopiad Cultural Village used to organize a 40-minute river cruise off Moyog River in a Lipa Lipa boat to this jetty during which you can see rice fields and other countryside sceneries.  According to Daniel, the restaurant was so packed and thinks that it must also be packed daily despite its location which is rather secluded!

Daniel and his fishing gang just love fishing!  What I like about each of Daniel’s trip is his catch.  Notice the size of the fish they caught?  They get a lot of those, and it’s a normal catch, according to Daniel.

Daniel got hooked with fishing later than his brother. As years passed by, one trip led to another and so on. So, it now has become a passion!  I can’t quite put together how they can stand just waiting for a fish to grab the bait!! Well, I guess fishing i.e the waiting is something that could kill time?  

I don’t know much about fishing, so can’t say much.  I can however imagine them enjoying their trips.  I think fishing can be quite fun (or really fun) especially if the intention is combined between passion and as a chance to enjoy the out-door, being out-side spending time with friends and talk about whatever. 

If we (we as in me and my circle of friends) were to go on fishing trip, I can imagine either one of the following two happening: 1) set off and come back an hour later  or  2) set off and forget to come back

Well, if you’re an enthusiast,  according to Daniel,  spots called Mengalum and Mantanani  in Sabah (Malaysia)  are recommended!   These two are most popular among the locals and visitors alike.  There are other spots which locations I can’t recall, but if you need to know, send a message.
